Iceland: Women’s Winter Weekend Escape

Glaciers, geysers and (hopefully) the Northern Lights await!

Embrace winter on this frosty foray. Together we’ll explore the snowy countryside on a Golden Circle tour with stops at Gullfoss Waterfall and the Great Geysir. We’ll surmount a glacier, stroll the frigid black sand beaches and throw back pints at the country’s only women-owned brewery. Our tour heats up with a steamy dip in the Blue Lagoon and at a house party hosted by two queens of the local lesbian scene. Perhaps most importantly, this exciting short-haul includes a chance to check out The Northern Lights—one of travel’s great treats.

If you’re more of a warm weather gal, perhaps our Icelandic summer tour is of more interest.

ITINERARY

Day 1 Reykjavik

Halló—welcome to Reykjavik! After checking into your room please join us for a Welcome Meeting where you’ll meet your guide Ziggy and get a quick intro to the sparsely populated country. After introductions, Ziggy will take us on a walking tour to see the city’s highlights such as Hallgrimskirkja, Harpa and the Sun Voyager. At tonight’s official Welcome Dinner we’ll be treated like VIP at one of the city’s best restaurants, known for its excellent wine selection. After dinner you’re welcome to hit the hay early in preparation for our tomorrow’s big day or enjoy a final nightcap at the city’s small but mighty LGBT bar. Be sure to look skyward while walking back to the hotel as this will be our first chance to glimpse the allusive Aurora Borealis, aka The Northern Lights.

Day 2 South Shore Safari

Today we’ve got a full day ahead with our South Shore Safari. Via private transportation we’ll venture into The Land of Fire & Ice’s famously rugged countryside, stopping at viewpoints and noteworthy sights. For example we’ll visit glaciers, walk on a particularly striking black sand beach, and if the weather is on our side, we’ll even be able to see volcanoes in the distance. We’ll photograph both Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. If the region seems oddly familiar, that’s because you’ve seen it in movies and television such as Game of Thrones. After stopping for lunch we’ll enjoy an invigorating glacier hike with our private guide then wind down with a couple of brewskies at much lauded Lady Brewery—please note: this activity may take place earlier depending on reservations. Finally, why not use your free time this evening to enjoy our countryside hotel’s outdoor geothermal pool with yet another opportunity to see the Northern Lights.

Day 3 The Golden Circle

Today’s journey begins or ends by treading in the footsteps of the vikings at Thingvellir National Park. Together we’ll walk through a gorge that is being torn apart by the shifting tectonic plates below. It’s through this rugged landscape we’ll stumble upon UNESCO-listed Althing, an open-air assembly space used by Nordsmen from 930–1798 AD to set laws and settle disputes. Beyond Thingvellir, another highlight  of our day will be a visit to Gullfoss waterfall, arguably one of the most beautiful in the world! We’ll also witness the power of the Great Geysir. Then it’s back to our beautiful guesthouse for a free evening and dinner on your own.

Day 4 Reykjanes Peninsula and The Blue Lagoon

This morning we ride along the Reykjanes Peninsula to see the geological wonders of what is considered to be the youngest part of Iceland. Two interesting stops we’ll make include Iceland’s longest and most famous lava tunnel (which we’ll actually spelunk), and the point where two tectonic plates meet. After a few photos at both sites it’s off to the world-famous Blue Lagoon for a steamy dip and mud mask treatment. Today’s scrumptious (and healthy!) lunch will be served at Hjá Höllu in the small fishing village, Grindavík. Our day ends back in Reykjavik with free time to further explore the city before our Farewell Dinner. For our final evening together we’ve been personally invited to a house party hosted by two fabulous local ladies, Eva and Birna. From their gorgeous apartment we’ll have our final chance to glimpse The Northern Lights.
