TANZANIA

THE BIG FIVE, LUXURY SAFARIS, AND EPIC KILIMANJARO CLIMBING WITH OUT ADVENTURES GAY TRAVEL

The Lowdown

From the snow-capped peaks of Mt Kilimanjaro - the largest free-standing mountain on Earth - to the Serengeti Plains and Ngorongoro Crater, which are home to more than 1,500 species of animals, this country is a testament to the power of nature. Whether you're looking to challenge your limits with an epic hike, or spot the Big Five on safari, Tanzania is a worthwhile place to visit. You can even unwind on the pristine beaches of Zanzibar, an exotic archipelago in the Indian ocean.

The LGBT Factor

Long story short, homosexuality is illegal in Tanzania. While locals in the tourism industry are more accepting, complete discretion is advised (even heterosexual public displays of affection are frowned upon on the Muslim coast and in Zanzibar). That said, your crew, staff, and accommodations with OUT Adventures are all very welcoming.

The Best Time to Visit

While our tours are scheduled in January and February, July and August are also a great time to visit Tanzania - these months offer the best chance of clear skies and low precipitation. Temperatures while on safari will hover around 25C/77F. For those climbing Kilimanjaro, temperatures will drop roughly 6.5C for every 1,000m we ascend, with averages of 9C/48F at 3,150m/10,300m, 2C/25F at 4,500m/15,000ft, and -6C/20F (-13C/8F with windchill) at the summit.

The Shock Factor

Tourism in Tanzania is somewhat developed, but you can expect to see extreme poverty, and service levels may not be what you're used to.

Visas

All visas are the responsibility of the traveller, and should be arranged in advance of arriving to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Although visas can be arranged upon arrival, we recommend making arrangements in advance to avoid possible delays or problems. If you are flying into Nairobi, a Kenyan visa will also be required.

Vaccinations

Based on entry requirements, there are no vaccinations needed for entry unless you are travelling from a Yellow Fever Zone (in which case you will be required to provide proof of Yellow Fever vaccination). To determine if you should take preventative measures to reduce the risk of illness, consult your doctor or a travel medical clinic, as OUT Adventures cannot provide vaccination recommendations.

Kilimanjaro Gay Climb

The Out Adventures trip to Kilimanjaro has been one of my holiday highlights. Highlights of the climb were: (1) reaching the summit; (2) making great connections with the other travellers because we all "suffered together" so to speak; and (3) being impressed by the seamless, professional operation of the trip. They were phenomenal in the breaking down and setting up of camps and the preparation of excellent food on a consistent basis. They also treated us very well and there was a high level of care and concern for our wellbeing. I would highly recommend both Out Adventures and Team Kilimanjaro if anyone were interested in summiting Africa's highest mountain.
